Getting There
Getting to Edirne
Edirne sits about 2–2.5 hours from Istanbul by motorway — close enough for a day trip. From getting there from Istanbul to city transport, the Kapıkule and Pazarkule border crossings and the bus terminal, here's everything you need.
How to Get from Istanbul to Edirne
Istanbul to Edirne is about 230 km and takes roughly 2–2.5 hours by motorway (O-3/TEM). Frequent intercity buses take about 3–4 hours and arrive at Edirne's bus terminal, from where you reach the centre by city bus or taxi.
→Edirne Bus Terminal: Location and Transfers
Edirne's bus terminal is not within walking distance of the centre; it sits outside town. To reach the historic core, use the city buses that depart from the terminal or take a taxi.
→Kapıkule Border Crossing: Gateway to Bulgaria
Kapıkule, west of Edirne, is the border crossing into Bulgaria's Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint. As one of Europe's busiest land borders, long queues can form, especially during holiday periods.
→Pazarkule and İpsala: Greek Border Crossings
Pazarkule, near Edirne, is the crossing into Greece's Kastanies checkpoint. İpsala is the other main crossing into Greece, located on the E-90 highway; either can be preferred depending on congestion.
→Getting Around Edirne
Edirne's historic centre is largely walkable; Selimiye, the Eski Cami and Üç Şerefeli are close together. For areas outside the centre, the terminal or Karaağaç, city buses and taxis are practical.
